2009 márciusában zajlott le a 18. Destillata párlatverseny, amely a világ egyik legrangosabb eseménye. 13 országból küldtek több, mint 1600 mintát. A tét hatalmas volt, hiszen a nemzetközi szakmai zsűri ezek közül választotta ki a legjobbakat. Március 13-án lehullt a lepel a bécsi Grand Casino Badenben, ahol 2009-ben az Év Főzdéje A Destillata Nemzetközi Párlatverseny Összesített Győztese az Agárdi Pálinkafőzde lett Vértesi Tibor Főzőmester vezetésével.
Magyarország, Ausztria, Németország, Olaszország, Görögország, Argentína, Új-Zéland, Svédország, Svájc, Thaiföld, Szlovákia, Ausztrália és Hollandia főzőmesterei 1600 mintát küldtek a világ egyik legrangosabb versenyére. 2009-ben módosultak a szabályok, szigorúbbak lettek, így a tét is sokkal nagyobb lett. A nemzetközi szakmai zsűri négy szempont alapján hozta meg döntését. Ezek: Illat- és íztisztaság, gyümölcs karakteressége, harmónia. A zsűri értékelése alapján a Destillata Nemzetközi Párlatversenyen az év főzdéje aranyfokozatot és a magyarországi Nemzetgyőztes díjat az Agárdi Pálinkafőzde nyerte.
A kiosztott érmekből 96 talált magyar gazdára. Négy pálinka nyerte el az „Edelbrände des Jahres”, vagyis az év pálinkája díjat. Emellett öt arany, 32 ezüst és 55 bronzérem került magyar tulajdonba.
“2009 Magyarország éve volt a Destillatán” – mondta a díjátadón Wolfgang Lukas versenyigazgató. – A Destillata történelmében negyedszer kerül nem Ausztriából származó főzdéhez ez a cím, és idén első alkalommal viheti el magyarországi mesterműhely ezt a szakmában világbajnoki éremnek számító díjat. Kétségtelenül óriási eredmény ez Magyarországnak, az Agárdi Pálinkafőzdének és nem utolsó sorban Vértes Tibornak.”
49 új nevező volt a mezőnyben, akik a “Newcomer des Jahres” díjért küzdhettek. Ezt azok között osztották ki, aki első ízben neveztek a versenyre. Természetesen ezt az érmet is magyar kapta meg, a Matheus Pálinkaház kft.
Érmeket nyertek még a GUSTO pálinkák Lajosmizséről, a Brill-Market kft, Vitalis kft, Zimek Manufaktura, Bolyhos Zoltán.
