Az Egri Víz történelmi italunk, mely a 18. század közepéről származik. Jezsuita szerzetes patikusok fedezték fel Egerben, gyógyszerként alkalmazták. Használták fejfájásra, szédülésre, emésztési zavarokra, szíverősítőnek, magas vérnyomás, agyvérzés ellen, valamint reumás bántalmakra; külsőleg és belsőleg egyaránt.
Az ital összetételének, készítésének módját, az emberöltők során egymást követő szerzetesek szigorúan őrizték, titkolták. Már 1771-ből rendelkezésre állnak irattári adatok arra, hogy az egri jezsuita gyógyszertár nem adta át a rendhez tartozó kassai testvérpatika részére sem a receptet.
Az Ital elkészítéséhez felhasznált gyógy- és fűszernövények között egyszerű, Magyarországon honos pld. a levendula virág, kakukkfű, méhfű, citromfű mellett, a szerzetesek által külföldről behozott kü-lönlegességek is vannak, mint például a szegfűszeg, szerecsendió, guajakfa stb.
Az eredeti recept alapján elkészített alkoholos párlatot, mint egy egyedi aromájú italkülönlegességet, a jó íze- és a megtapasztalt jó egészségügyi hatása miatt, aranyéremmel jutalmazták és érdemke-reszttel tüntették ki Bécsben, több mint 100 évvel ezelőtt. A “Királyok Vizének” is hívták. A 20. század második felében szeszesitalként került forgalomba, de már nem az eredeti előállítási módon.
